Project Pericles is a vibrant consortium of colleges and universities that promotes civic engagement within higher education.

Building on the innovative vision of Eugene M. Lang, Project Pericles works in the classroom, on the campus, and in the community.

The national office of Project Pericles collaborates with Periclean colleges and universities to encourage faculty to incorporate civic engagement and social responsibility into the curriculum, and to empower students as effective advocates and leaders. Our research projects and publications foster greater awareness within higher education about the value and importance of civic engagement.

A Peek at This Year's 
Debating for Democracy (D4D)™ National Conference

Leading one of the conference workshops is Christopher Kush, author of The One-Hour Activist and CEO of Soapbox, a dedicated and successful group of advocacy trainers. Previously, he ran D4D on the Road workshops for us in 2008-2009 and 2012-2013. His workshop will provide student leaders with the tools to refine and advance the issues raised in their letters to an elected official into actionable projects.


"If the Wind Doesn't Blow – Row: Empowering All Students through Integrated Civic Engagement Curricula Panel"

On January 26 as part of AAC&U's 2017 National Meeting in San Francisco, Project Pericles and four Periclean Colleges presented a panel on how campuses are working to provide coherent and integrated programs to more effectively empower students. The session was standing room only with an audience of more than 100 attendees.

Adrienne Falcón of Carleton College; Amy Koritz of Drew University; Jan Liss of Project Pericles; John McLain of The Evergreen State College; and Tessa Hicks Peterson of Pitzer College discussed how their campuses represented one or more of the five models presented in our recently released white paper, Creating Cohesive Paths to Civic Engagement: Five Approaches to Institutionalizing Civic Engagement, as well as other insights from the Creating Cohesive Paths initiative.

Creating Cohesive Paths to Civic Engagement:
Five Approaches to Institutionalizing Civic Engagement

The white paper documents the accomplishments of 26 participating colleges and universities as part of Project Pericles' three-year initiative to promote a more intentional approach to civic engagement that prioritizes coherent program design and the diffusion of civic engagement throughout the undergraduate experience.

Research reveals five basic approaches to organizing curricular and co-curricular programming for civic engagement: Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility Requirements, Civic Scholars Programs, Pathway Approaches, Certificates, and Entrepreneurial/Open Choice Models.

It discusses how a mapping/survey of the civic engagement curriculum can serve as a powerful catalyst for change on campus and shares other insights from the initiative.

The White Paper and the Creating Cohesive Paths to Civic Engagement Initiative were supported by The Eugene M. Lang Foundation and The Teagle Foundation.


D4D on the Road 2016-2017

Our first five workshops at Pitzer College, Pace University, Chatham University, Wagner University, and Bates College were inspiring to all those in attendance: students, faculty, staff, and community partners. The next year will start at Carleton College and then follow to Ursinus College, the Evergreen State College, and Goucher College. Our trainers come from the FrameWorks Institute. They are a 2015 MacArthur Foundation Award winner for Creative and Effective Institutions, and are known for their development of the Strategic Framework Analysis, rooting communications in the cognitive and social sciences.


Multicampus Research Project on Student Well-being and Civic Engagement Led by Project Pericles

Project Pericles and its collaborators commenced work this spring on a multi-campus research project that examines the impact of civic engagement on student well-being. Bates College, Goucher College, Hendrix College, and Pitzer College are collaborating on the study supported by Bringing Theory to Practice (BTtoP).
